Blue Ocean Consulting supports diversity at work and as part of our business strategy, we are featuring women in technology. Last year, women held 57 percent of professional occupations in the U.S., but only comprised 26 percent of the jobs in the tech industry. The BOC team is proud to introduce a new series about diverse workplace culture with this week’s focus on Shilpi Gupta, quality assurance analyst of BOC.
How long have you worked in the tech/software industry?
Around seven years.
What do you currently do?
I am in quality assurance.
How do you think women are making an impact in the tech/software industry?
Women can bring a different perspective. We want and need to see greater diversity in the technology industry so we benefit from a wide pool of talent. Mixed gender teams definitely produce better results.
In many organizations lead roles are played by women and many have set examples in tech industry like Sheryl Sandberg, Virginia Rometty, Susan Wojcicki, Marissa Mayer etc.
Do you feel there is a gender equality gap in the tech industry and why/why not?
I feel there is certainly gender equality in IT organizations. Also, I personally have never experienced it and even if a person is talented, then it doesn't matter if it’s man or woman. They are given equal opportunities, no one select employees based on their gender, it completely depends upon their talent.
Who influences you?
